The SoloQuest

Introducing The SoloQuest

The SoloQuest has been quietly developed as an AI-powered solo D&D 5e experience. It acts as a personal AI Dungeon Master, enabling users to create a character, pick a scenario, and play through a fully narrated adventure with real ability checks, combat mechanics, and death saves. No scheduling or party coordination is needed—just the player and the dice.

Why The SoloQuest Was Created

Many D&D fans love the game but struggle to form a consistent group. The goal was to capture the essence of playing at a table—the narrative tension, mechanical depth, and the unpredictability of dice rolls—while making the experience accessible anytime, on any device. Inspiration struck after exploring Old Greg's Tavern, sparking the desire to create something customizable.

Highlights of the Development Process

  • The AI aspect is endlessly fascinating. Crafting an AI to serve as a competent DM—capable of tracking state, enforcing rules, building compelling NPCs, and maintaining challenge—provides continuous learning opportunities in prompt design and narrative coherence.
  • Character creation brought immense satisfaction. The system includes over 40 archetypes across all D&D 5e races and classes, each with unique backstories and flavor. Watching characters like a Tiefling Shadowbound Arcanist or a Halfling Quickstep Trickster take shape has been highly rewarding.
  • Playing the game feels special. Testing sessions often transform into deep, engaging adventures, showcasing the project's genuine enjoyment and playability.

The Motivation for Building in Public

Solo development can feel isolating, with progress and motivation coming purely from within. Sharing the journey aims to introduce accountability and community. The intention is to document wins, challenges, design decisions, and insights about AI, game design, and solo product development.

  • For those interested in D&D, AI, indie game development, or the solo dev experience, following the journey is encouraged.
